More than 55,000 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK on a single day, the highest daily case number on record.
In total, 55,892 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, beating the previous record which was set earlier this week.
Tuesday, December 29's figure of 53,135 cases was the previous highest since the pandemic began.
It brings the total number of UK cases so far to 2,488,780 and the total number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test to 73,512.
The number of deaths reported today in 964, just slightly lower than the 981 recorded on Wednesday, December 30.
Yesterday's number was the highest daily death toll since April 24, back during the first lockdown.
