Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the rare admission of military losses in an interview with Sky News. Asked if the war had amounted to humiliation for Russia given the number of troops lost, he said: “No, it’s a wrong understanding of what’s going on.” But he admitted: “We have significant losses of troops. And it’s a huge tragedy for us.” Kyiv Independent defence correspondent Illia Ponomarenko commented on Twitter: “Wow. I mean, wow. If even Peskov admits the Russian military in Ukraine has sustained ‘substantial casualties,’ which is a ‘tragedy to us,’ this means their situation is close to just catastrophic.”
