What is national siblings day and how is it celebrated? – The Sun

SIBLINGS can be hard to deal with sometimes but deep down, we all hold unconditional love for them.

They grew up with us in the same household and saw us go through different stages of life while supporting us, and that is why we celebrate National Siblings Day.

What is National Siblings Day?

On April 10, we celebrate our brothers and sisters and tend to show a bit more how much we truly love them, even though we just fought about who goes first in the shower earlier this morning.

The idea was initially conceived by Claudia Evart to honour her brother and sister who both died at early ages.

April 10 was chosen as it was the birthday of her late sister, Lisette.

It takes its inspiration from Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

The Siblings Day Foundation was incorporated in 1997 and became a charity in 1999.

According to the foundation it is meant to “honour, celebrate and memorialise all brothers and sisters, and the bond that is forever a special gift”.

However, the day is not officially recognised.

How is National Siblings Day celebrated?

There is no traditional way how to celebrate National Siblings Day.

If you and your siblings enjoy having a day out or use Sunday to go and watch the football or maybe stay inside and have a Netflix marathon, you are free to do it.

You decide on how to show your siblings that you love them.

You can always buy them a gratitude card or maybe tell them to get together and make something for each other.

There is no better gift than one that comes from the heart and that holds a special meaning to it.

Is Siblings Day different to Brother and Sister Day?

It is very similar to  Siblings Day.

Brother and Sister day is celebrated every year on May 2, to honour the relationships between brothers and sisters.

The idea for the day came about when a woman realised after her brother's death that she had never let him know how much he meant to her.

But despite its growing popularity, it is still not celebrated on the same scale as Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Brother and Sister day is an event to mark and honour the lifelong bonds between brothers and sisters.

It follows in the spirit of Mother's Day and Father's Day and aims to celebrate family values.
